SLB acquires Tachyus, bringing real-time AI reservoir modeling to more than 7,500 wells worldwide

SLB has agreed to acquire Tachyus Corp., a Houston-based software firm, adding an AI-powered reservoir management platform to its digital portfolio. The deal brings Aqueon, Tachyus's flagship product, into SLB's Delfi and Lumi systems, extending real-time subsurface modelling to a fleet of wells that includes large inventories of idle and marginal assets.
Aqueon combines reservoir physics with machine learning to simulate subsurface conditions at speed. Where conventional simulators can take hours or days, the platform evaluates thousands of scenarios in minutes. Operators use it for waterflood management, pressure forecasting, saltwater disposal, and enhanced oil recovery across both conventional and unconventional fields.
The timing reflects a shift in regulatory pressure. Federal methane rules are tightening, and periodic well inspections are giving way to continuous risk monitoring. Static assessments increasingly fail to satisfy the pace at which regulators expect operators to identify integrity and emissions risks. "Reservoir management is becoming increasingly dynamic as operators look to maximize recovery from existing assets," said Rakesh Jaggi, president of SLB's Digital business.
Ageing infrastructure compounds the problem. Operators holding large numbers of idle wells face a multi-decade plugging and abandonment programme, and the liabilities attached to unmonitored assets are rising. Continuous subsurface monitoring narrows the window between an emerging risk and a regulatory or environmental failure.
SLB's Tachyus deal follows a separate agreement to acquire S&P Global's upstream software portfolio earlier this year, extending its reach across daily planning workflows used by US shale producers. Both moves point toward a broader ambition: embedding digital infrastructure at the point where subsurface data meets production decisions, rather than treating analytics as a downstream reporting function.
